Changing the Gender Recognition Act Restricts Everyone's Freedom and Does Not Improve the Lives of Transgender People

Minister for Women and Equalities Justine Greening, has announced plans to “streamline and de-medicalise the process for changing gender…”

Currently, in order to change gender, an individual has to provide evidence that he/she has been living as the opposite gender for two years, as well as be medically diagnosed with gender dysphoria – a condition where a person experiences distress due to a perceived mismatch between his/her gender identity, and their objective bodily sex.

Now however Ms Greening is advancing her plan to remove the requirement for a doctor to confirm that an individual is suffering from dysphoria and remove the requirement that a person be living as the other gender for two years.

This move is ostensibly to make society more “inclusive” according to Ms Greening and end a “demeaning and broken” system, according to LGBT campaign group Stonewall.

While there are a small number of people who are suffering greatly due to their feeling alienated from their own body in the way described, Ms Greening's radical proposals will have serious consequences for all of us, and there is no evidence to show that her plan will actually help those with gender dysphoria.

If Ms Greening gets her way, it appears that all that is needed to change your gender is to self-identify as that gender and undergo a simple administrative procedure.

This will not help people suffering with gender dysphoria:

• Attempting to change gender through medical means does not improve the mental health outcomes for transgendered people who continue to have a high likelihood of attempting suicide and are 19 times more likely than the general population to die by suicide .
• A minority of children who experience cross gender identification will continue to do so into adolescence.

Given the high degree of mental health conditions often associated with gender dysphoria, removing the requirement to have medical supervision when legally changing gender will do nothing to help such people.

It will create legal chaos as the system being proposed is open to serious abuse.

• There has already been much turmoil, particularly in the U.S. about who can use which toilets and changing facilities. Anyone, whether they suffer from gender dysphoria or not, could use any toilet or changing facility and claim discrimination if not allowed in.
• This problem is not confined to toilets and changing facilities but also to women’s hospital wards, women’s shelters and women’s sports. (here and here)

Changing the Gender Recognition Act 2004 combined with the Equality Act 2010, which stipulates that “gender reassignment” is a protected characteristic, will inevitably amount to a state imposed ideology where individuals are coerced and/or ostracised for refusing to comply with it.

• Anyone who accepts the truth that who we are as men and women is inherently linked with our roles in reproduction, and who dares to say that changing sex or gender is an impossibility, will be called a “transphobe” and a “bigot”, and could face legal punishment of one kind or another.
• Any business which refuses to allow people of the opposite biological sex into their toilets or changing facility could face legal action; and anyone in the workplace who refuses to call an individual by their preferred “gender pronoun” could face serious difficulties and even loss of employment.

Please sign this petition to Justine Greening urging her to reject these proposals which do not help people who identify as transgender, and will create many difficulties and legal chaos for the many people who inevitably resist.

Changing the Gender Recognition Act Restricts Everyone's Freedom and Does Not Improve the Lives of Transgender People

For the attention of Secretary of State for Education and Minister for Women and Equalities, Justine Greening MP

Dear Ms Greening,

I wish to make known my concerns regarding your proposed changes to the Gender Recognition Act 2004, and urge you not to implement such changes.

These changes amount to state imposed ideology which will do nothing to help people with gender dysphoria; the changes will result in legal chaos; and the changes will lead to anyone who opposes these changes – not only in their actions but in their thoughts and words – being socially ostracised and discriminated against.

1. Despite your claim that this should not be seen as a mental health issue, both the DSM and the NHS recognise that Gender dysphoria is a mental health condition. Furthermore, there are high rates of suicide and attempted suicide among those suffering from gender dysphoria.

Given this reality, it is extremely unwise and uncaring to people with gender dysphoria, to remove any requirement that a medical practitioner give an opinion before being able to apply for gender recognition.

2. Your proposals are open to serious abuse as men or women could disingenuously change their gender in order to gain access to women’s changing facilities or women’s sports for example.

3. Legal chaos will ensue as many people and institutions refuse to accept this state imposed ideology. Many businesses, in accordance with their conscience, will feel unable to allow biological men into opposite sex toilets/changing facilities.

On the grounds of fairness and equality, many women will rightly object to biological men competing in sports with them. Biological men competing in female sport will inevitably come to dominate the field as has already happened in other countries.

Furthermore, many women will rightly object to biological men being allowed in women’s hospital wards and women’s shelters.

While anybody suffering with gender identity issues needs help, the changes you propose amount to state imposed ideology which will not actually help people with gender dysphoria and will create legal chaos as certain individuals inevitably take advantage of a system open to abuse.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
