Abortion Activist Given £500,000 of Your Money to Promote Abortion

Earlier this month, Life Charity came under considerable pressure from certain quarters of the media and the abortion lobby because of a small government grant they have received to assist them in their vital work. They will use this money to continue to providing housing and practical support for the most vulnerable pregnant women.

It has since emerged that Professor Sally Sheldon (University of Kent) has received over £500,000 of taxpayer money to fund her research project into the 1967 Abortion Act. However, Prof. Sheldon is a known abortion extremist who has previously defended sex-selective abortion and abortion up until birth, (here and here) and she is using this review to promote her own ideological agenda.

Her “research” into the Act has apparently found that midwives and nurses should perform surgical abortions in this country, and she intends to lobby politicians and attempt to influence educators using her “findings”. And all this is being done at the expense of the taxpayer.

Prof. Sheldon not only has a despicable record of defending abortion throughout all nine months of pregnancy and abortion defending abortion of baby girls because they are girls, she is also a member of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service’s (BPAS) board of trustees. (BPAS is the largest abortion provider in Britain and shares Prof. Sheldon’s extremism.)

  1. Your taxes are funding this pseudo-research.
  2. Prof. Sheldon and her colleagues can rightly be called abortion fanatics as they desire abortion for any reason up until birth.
  3. There is already a shortage of midwives in the UK and Prof. Sheldon’s proposals will only decrease the number of people wanting to enter that profession. As thousands of midwives have made clear, they entered the profession to bring new life into the world – not to end it.

Please sign this petition to Greg Clark MP, Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (who is ultimately accountable for the funding Prof. Sheldon has received), objecting to this use of our taxes and asking him to do all within his power to rescind this funding and amend the imbalance in how funding is distributed among different interest groups.

Regarding the Use of Public Money for Abortion Activists

Dear Secretary of State for the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, Greg Clarke MP,

According to its website, the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) receives funding through the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS). As the Secretary of State for said Department, you are ultimately accountable for the actions of this Department.

With this in mind, I write to you in relation to the funding provided for Professor Sally Sheldon in her research on the 1967 Abortion Act. This money came from the AHRC, which has apparently come from your Department and can therefore be traced back to the taxpayer.

Life Charity have recently come under considerable pressure in regard to a small government grant they received to assist them in their vital work of helping the most vulnerable pregnant women by providing housing and other practical support. Due to their pro-life beliefs, certain quarters of the media and other important actors have called for them to lose this money.

There has been no similar public outcry against the decision to the provide funding for Professor Sheldon’s project despite the fact that she is a known supporter/defender of sex selective abortion and abortion up to birth, and she is now campaigning for midwives to perform abortions.

From a practical perspective alone this is unwise as, according to the Royal College of Midwives, there is a shortage of midwives, and such extreme proposals are likely to further deter people from entering the profession.

Whilst there is a clear imbalance here, the situation is made worse by the fact that Professor Sheldon’s research, according to the abstract, will be used to lobby politicians, influence education in schools and to influence the wider public.

Such research is extremely far from neutral but it is replete with the bias of its author who is also a member of the British Pregnancy Advisory Service’s (BPAS) board of trustees. BPAS are the nation’s largest abortion provider and obviously have a significant interest in seeing abortion law expanded further.

I strongly object to my taxes being used to fund such a project, and I demand an explanation for this. Furthermore, it is unacceptable that Life Charity should be pressured into relinquishing the small funding they did receive and Professor Sheldon and the abortion lobby, not be scrutinised in the slightest. There is a clear bias here and you are partially responsible for this.

I ask you to do all within your power to amend this imbalance and remove the funding that Professor Sheldon is using to advance her own ideology at the expense of the taxpayer.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
