Say no to the sterilization of prisoners in Tennessee!

General Sessions Judge Sam Benningfield of White County, Tennessee, has decided it will be better for the world if former prisoners are unable to have children. He is offering prisoners 30 days less jail time if they voluntarily sterilize themselves. This is an example of modern-day eugenics of vulnerable populations and should be resisted.

Prisoners should serve their time in jail and then be reintegrated into society as individuals still made in the image of God – not enticed to sterilize themselves in order to avoid another month in jail. Judge Sam Benningfield is an elected judge so what you think of him has an impact.

Please sign this petition to Judge Sam Benningfield telling him that his ruling disturbs you and that you do not support eugenics. We need to protect all vulnerable populations and stand up for a culture of life and family. Just because a young man did drugs and served his time does not disqualify him from the ability to marry, hold a job, and support a family! And the lie that his children would be less valuable than other children feeds directly into support for abortion!

Consider how this situation might play out. A young man, say 20, is caught carrying drugs and is sentenced to several months in jail. He is terrified of being in jail. He will do anything to get out of jail and a judge tells him he can get out of jail a whole month earlier if he will sterilize himself.

At the time, he isn’t thinking about his future or his ability to father children – he is just thinking about getting out of jail. But now, as a result of Benningfield’s ruling, he is unable to have children ever. It doesn’t matter if he straightens his life out, commits to a woman through marriage, joins a church and hold down a steady job –he’s already been disqualified from biological fatherhood through Benningfield’s eugenics program.

We must take a stand against eugenics in order to protect vulnerable populations. The founder of Planned Parenthood, Margaret Sanger was a huge advocate of eugenics. She said that eugenics should be used to weed out “bad” people from the population. She stated that, “morons, mental defectives, epileptics, illiterates, paupers, unemployables, criminals, prostitutes, and dope fiends” should be sterilized for the good of humanity.

But as Christians, we need to take the stance that all life is precious is the sight of God and should be protected. There shouldn’t be a ruling class who determines who gets to have babies and who does not. We should fight for the dignity of all people. To prisoners, we should hold out the hope of the gospel and pray that God transforms their minds, hearts, and lives. And we should fight for their ability to have a family after incarceration.

Eugenics of vulnerable populations

Judge Sam Benningfield,

It has come to my attention that you are offering prisoners 30 days less jail time if they voluntarily sterilize themselves.

I believe this practice of eugenics against a vulnerable population, incarcerated individuals, is wrong and must be stopped. Prisoners should serve their time in jail and then be reintegrated into society as individuals made in the image of God – not enticed to sterilize themselves in order to avoid another month in jail.

Just because a young man did drugs and served his time should not disqualify him from the ability to marry, hold a job, and support a family!

The ability to have a family is a basic human right. Enticing vulnerable populations to give up that ability in order to avoid longer jail time is cruel.

Please consider the consequences of your ruling.

Sincerely,
