Stand in Solidarity with Burnette Chapel Church of Christ

Earlier this week, tragedy struck Nashville, Tennessee, when a gunman opened fired on Burnette Chapel Church of Christ—killing Melanie Crow and wounding seven others.

In the face of this unspeakable tragedy, please commit to pray for Burnette Chapel Church of Christ and sign this letter of solidarity and support. In times of great crisis, it is important that the Christian church grieves with those who grieve.

On Sunday at 11:15am, 25-year-old Emanuel Kidega Samson drove up to Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in a blue SUV. He got out of the car with a mask on his face and shot and killed mother of two Melanie Smith. He then entered the sanctuary and opened fire on the congregation wounding seven more.

22-year-old usher Robert Caleb Engle tackled the shooter Samson. Samson accidentally shot himself during the struggle. Engle then ran out to his car, got his own registered gun and ran back into the church to stand guard over the wounded Samson until the police arrived on the scene.

"Mr. Engle saved countless lives here today," said Don Aaron, of the Metro Nashville Police Department. "He is, at the end of the day, the hero in this because we think this could've been much worse in terms of death."

But tragically, Melanie Crow was heartlessly murdered at her church. Melanie’s daughter Breanna says that her mother was a woman who loved God.

"Everybody's looking for why, why, why," Breanna Smith said. "There's no understanding evil. There's no understanding hate."

It is at times like these that the reality of sin and evil in the world becomes real and imminent. The reason for the shooting in Nashville, and all of the evil that we see around us, is that the human condition has been horribly polluted by rebellion to God through sin. Evil is very real and must be punished. Which is why, God sent his Son into the world to pay the penalty for sin so that we could be healed.

Right now we are still living in a broken creation, but when Christ returns, all will be healed and all will be made right.

As we wait for his return, let us cling to our brothers and sisters at Burnette Chapel Church of Christ in prayer and surround them with support.
