Irish Gov't and Parties: Pro-Lifers Must Have EQUAL Presence on Oireachtas Committee on the 8th!

Only days after the Citizens' Assembly's sickeningly cruel display of discrimination against the unborn - where they voted on different stages of pregnancy, recommending when, and under what circumstance innocent unborn life could, in the future, be taken in Irish hospitals - the Government parties were busy nominating TDs and Senators to sit on the Cross-Party Oireachtas Committee on the 8th Amendment.

This Committee will presumably accept the final recommendations on the 8th Amendment from Justice Laffoy, who is drafting a report on the results of the Assembly's balloting on the issue (mentioned above).

And, as it seems that Laffoy will regurgitate to the Committee what the Assembly proposed in its ballots, it is nearly certain that the Oireachtas Committee will be charged with issuing its own recommendations based on those of the Citizens' Assembly.

Which, in simple English, means that the pro-abortion side - the side favouring the repeal of the 8th Amendment - will already be at a distinct and UNFAIR advantage to put across their barbaric point-of-view, while, simultaneously, denigrating the value of the lives of a whole segment of human beings (i.e., the unborn).

Even though speaking about the legalisation of killing is always wrong, nevertheless, we are already involved in this macabre charade.

Therefore, because this democracy demands equality from both sides during any debate on changing the Constitution, the citizens of Ireland must now, at minimum, demand EQUALITY in the pro-life presence on this Committee -- in ABSOLUTE NUMBERS of pro-life TDs and Senators actually sitting on the Committee.

It is not enough to say that "both sides are represented". NO. If we must engage in this process, there must be parity of numbers of pro-life and pro-abortion TDs and Senators, if only to give the unborn child adequate defence in the halls of the Oireachtas.

Why is this an issue?

Because, already, The Irish Times has reported that, of a selection of 9 TDs and Senators, who are prospective Committee members and who answered the newspaper's questions on the issue, 7 are pro-abortion, while 2 only are pro-life. 4 of the 9 also revealed that they were not only pro-abortion, but promoters of the "liberal option", which refers to abortion-on-demand.

This kind of imbalance is unacceptable! And so, at least, in order not to appear as a complete laughing-stock to the nation by this farcical, one-sided display, the Irish political establishment must come to its senses and do the honourable thing by giving the pro-life side an equal number of seats on the Committee.

The Government are still arguing over the number of seats for this Committee, so there is still time for changes to be made. Please make your voice heard and sign this urgent petition!

Thank you!

Parties Will Be Held Accountable If Pro-Life Equality Is Not Achieved on Oireachtas Committee on the 8th Amendment

For the Kind Attention of:

  • An Taoiseach - Mr Enda Kenny
  • Leader of Fianna Fail - Mr Micheal Martin
  • The Ombudsman of Ireland - Mr Peter Tyndall

The Cross-Party Oireachtas Committee on the 8th Amendment is now being formed. Though there has been some public dispute about the number of seats which are being allocated to the Dáil and the Seanad, the real issue has to do with the composition of the Committee on the basis of its membership being pro-life or pro-abortion.

And, so far, those nominated, either by their parties or by themselves, do not appear to give balance to both sides of the debate.

Though it should never be acceptable for any government body - anywhere - to discuss the taking of innocent human life, nevertheless, the pro-life community of Ireland have already allowed you, the Government, to go so far down this road with the farcically-biased, pro-abortion Citizens' Assembly, expecting fair play.

But, we were deceived. Well, no longer.

Now that the Houses of the Oireachtas are going to engage themselves in this debate, we, the undersigned, DEMAND equality in the absolute numbers of seats given to pro-life and pro-abortion TDs and Senators.

The 8th Amendment is not only the law of the land, which, therefore, should attract adequate defence by the state, BUT, it (the 8th Amendment) also provides real defence for real people (i.e., unborn people).

Therefore, we now call on the Irish political establishment to do the honourable thing, and give the pro-life side an equal number of seats on the Committee, even if it means vetting the TDs and Senators on their views on abortion and retaining 8th Amendment.

Thank you for your urgent consideration.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
