No "mor chikin" for travelers at DIA

UPDATE: 09/01/15 - The Denver City Council Business Development Committee voted unanimously in favor of Chick-fil-a's lease application at DIA. This is a victory for religious freedom! Thank you for signing and sharing this petition to raise awareness on this issue and pressure the committee to approve the lease.

---

Last Tuesday, the Denver City Council Business Development Committee met to approve Chick-fil-a's lease application for a restaurant at Denver International Airport (DIA). The meeting should have been fairly straightforward.

After all, Chick-fil-a was the second highest ranked business in a patron poll regarding restaurant options at DIA (Chipotle ranked first, but did not apply for the lease). The business is also expected to bring in a lot of revenue. According to the Denver Post, Chick-fil-a is expected to generate $4.1 million in revenue during its first year, which would result in $616,278 in concessions for the city.

Despite this, several members of the Business Development Committee voiced opposition to approving the lease application. They cited Chick-fil-a's past promotion of "discriminatory policies" as a reason to deny the lease application.

This harkens back to the controversy that unfolded in 2012, after Chick-fil-a CEO Dan Cathy made controversial statements about his personal Christian beliefs, specifically in relation to homosexual acts and relationships. However Chick-fil-a has made it clear that they do not discriminate against employees or customers. They treat everyone with the dignity and respect they deserve.

As the meeting minutes elaborate, "Councilwoman Kniech asked what the rules are for operating within an ideological restriction. Mr. Patel acknowledged that he is aware of no other similar corporate philosophies. Max Taylor, with DIA legal, elaborated on the non-discrimination clauses in the contract. The non-discrimination clause is a severable provision in the contract. Councilwoman Kniech addressed the national partner's history of promoting discriminatory policies against gay/lesbian/transgender populations."

This discussion, and the potential decision to deny Chick-fil-a's lease application, would infringe on Dan Cathy's First Amendment free speech rights and would wrongly discriminate against Chick-fil-a based on the CEO's personal beliefs. This is not only wrong, it is illegal and unconstitutional. As a government committee, the Business Development Committee cannot discriminate against a business based on the personal religious beliefs or statements of the CEO.

Sign this petition to send a letter directly to the Committee chair and Committee members demanding that they immediately end their wrongful discrimination against Chick-fil-a and approve the business's lease application.

Victory!

Allow Chick-fil-a at DIA

Dear Denver City Council Business Development Committee members,

I am disappointed that you would even consider denying Chick-fil-A's lease application at DIA. Your opposition to Chick-fil-A's lease is based solely on the statements Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy has made in the past about his Christian faith, specifically in relation to homosexual acts and relationships.

If you refuse Chick-fil-A's application to open at DIA, you will be denying Dan Cathy his First Amendment free speech rights and you will be wrongly discriminating against Chick-fil-A based on the CEO's personal beliefs. This is not only wrong, it is illegal. As a government committee, you cannot discriminate against a business based on the personal beliefs and statements of the CEO.

If you deny Chick-fil-A's lease application, it would be wrongful discrimination against the business. I urge you to reconsider your opposition to Chick-fil-A's lease application and ensure that this religious discrimination does not occur in the future.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
