Oregon, please protect vulnerable patients!

Healthcare providers should be in the business of protecting and caring for vulnerable patients, not causing their premature deaths.

However, House Bill 4135, recently introduced in the Oregon legislature, would allow the starving and dehydrating of patients who suffer from dementia or mental illness. This legislation is a direct result of the culture of death, which has permeated our culture—it must not be allowed!

Please sign this petition now Oregon legislature and ask them to reject this dangerous legislation. This legislation puts the lives of vulnerable patients in Oregon at risk. We must stand up and be the voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Our elderly and our sick neighbors deserve to be loved, cherished, and respected. This bill, and the worldview that advances assisted suicide, disposes of the weak in our society. We need to make sure that doctors and healthcare providers protect and care for patients, not kill them. (Especially those with mental illness who aren’t even capable of choosing such a thing!)

Oregon Right to Life states, “The bill severely and negatively impacts the end-of-life decision making of vulnerable Oregonians.  It would remove important patient protections by allowing a health care representative to make decisions contrary to the patient’s will.  This will put vulnerable dementia and Alzheimer’s patients, who may not have supportive advocates, at risk of starvation or dehydration.”

We must remember that all people are created in the image of God and have inherent worth, regardless of their stage of life or disability. There is sanctity in each and every human life, and we must fight on all fronts to protect the vulnerable –both at the beginning and end of life.

"The devil's last frontier is his assault on human dignity. And his most fierce battleground is on aging and disability." These powerful words were spoken by disability advocate Joni Eareckson Tada last week at the Evangelicals for Life Conference in Washington DC. Her words are true. There is a deadly narrative taking place in America that only the beautiful, the strong, and the able have lives worth living. This lethal mindset is leading many state lawmakers down the road to legalizing assisted-suicide and euthanasia.

Let’s fight against the culture of death. We must affirm the dignity of the elderly and vulnerable and fight to ensure safeguards against this kind of legally sanctioned killing.

Please asked the Oregon legislature to vote no on House Bill 4135 now!

Oppose House Bill 4135

Oregon legislature,

House Bill 4135, which has recently come up for your consideration, would allow the starving and dehydrating of patients who suffer from dementia or mental illness.

I believe this legislation would seriously jeopardize the safety of vulnerable patients in Oregon.  Please use your leadership to reject this dangerous legislation.

Our elderly and our sick neighbors deserve to be loved, cherished, and respected.  This bill communicates that, as a society, we believe they are worthless.

Every person has inherent worth and dignity, regardless of their stage of life.

Please oppose this legislation.

Sincerely,
