Don't make Labour the abortion party - respect freedom of conscience

This week, the Labour Party’s manifesto was released. It contained the following statement: “Labour will continue to ensure a woman’s right to choose a safe, legal abortion – and we will work with the Assembly to extend that right to women in Northern Ireland.” (http://www.labour.org.uk/page/-/Images/manifesto-2017/Labour%20Manifesto.... p.109 )

Voice for Justice UK is never party political, but the electorate, and in particular Labour supporters in the forthcoming election, should be aware of what appears the Party’s complete indifference to democracy. All who support the right to life of the unborn should be appalled.

From their policy statement, Labour intends to do absolutely nothing to improve the lives of women facing crisis pregnancy. Indeed, the only “choice” they appear willing to offer in situations of difficulty is abortion.

This is ideological tyranny:

1. Labour is seeking to impose an ideological view of abortion onto the people of N. Ireland – a people who up to now have consistently opposed any extension of access to abortion.

2. Labour is forcing a particular ideological view onto its MPs and ignoring the consciences of people within the wider party who do not hold, or disagree with, these radical views.

In short, Labour is promoting an anti-human policy, which ignores the consciences of its own supporters and attempts forcefully to impose an ideology onto a state which does not want it. When there is only one choice available, which choice is enforced by law, there is no choice at all.

This is not democracy.

Don't make Labour the abortion party - respect freedom of conscience

For the Attention of the Leader of the Labour Party, Mr Jeremy Corbyn,

Dear Mr Corbyn,

I write to you in regard to Labour’s 2017 Manifesto, published this week. I am extremely disappointed to see that the Labour Party – which prides itself on its role in defending and promoting equality, and in its manifesto has expressly committed itself to prioritise the reversal of democratic decline in the UK – is so deeply anti-equality in regard to human life and apparently dismissive of the democratically expressed will of those who disagree.

“Labour will continue to ensure a woman’s right to choose a safe, legal abortion – and we will work with the Assembly to extend that right to women in Northern Ireland.”

The 1967 Abortion Act allowing termination up to 24 weeks does not apply to Northern Ireland, where access to abortion is only permitted where there is a risk of permanent or serious injury to a woman’s mental or physical health if the pregnancy continues. Cases of foetal abnormality, rape or incest are not included.

There is undeniably controversy in the Province, and recent years have seen a push by so-called pro-choice groups such as Marie Stopes and the Family Planning Association (FPA) to legalise abortion in line with UK law. But according to the 2011 Census, 82.3% of the NI population describe themselves as Christian, and so far all such moves have been consistently rejected by the Northern Ireland Assembly. This has been described by Marion Woods of Life Northern Ireland as a reflection of the will of the people. She said, "We elect representatives to our Stormont government for a reason - people vote for these parties and these parties have voted to keep the law as it stands."

On the evidence of the Manifesto, however, the Labour Party appears to be saying that the democratically expressed will of the people is unimportant, and that the so-called right to abortion overrides all else.

I am deeply sceptical of any movement, which talks of the “right to choose” but attempts to override any democratic exercise of choice with which it disagrees and which, moreover, does nothing to offer an alternative to abortion. Rather this seems a clear and unequivocal commitment, if elected, to stifle the express will of the majority, suggesting ideological tyranny, which will not permit different views.

This pledge is profoundly discriminatory, dismissing without question the right to life of the unborn.

This is a gross betrayal of the Labour party’s ideals of fairness and equality.

1. Labour is seeking to impose an ideological view of abortion onto the people of N. Ireland – a people who up to now have consistently opposed any extension of access to abortion.

2. Labour is forcing a particular ideological view onto all its MPs and ignoring the consciences of people within the wider party who do not hold, or disagree with, these radical views.

This is unacceptable and I call upon the Labour Party to reassess its commitment to democracy and to cease enforcing ideological conformity in regard to abortion on other states and on its members.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
