Google Fires Engineer Who Dared To Question Its Liberal Approach to “Diversity”

Liberal media, politicians, and now increasingly big corporations often tout the value of gender diversity. To the extent that there are more men than women in a particular industry or company, the thinking goes, it must be caused by past discrimination. As such, liberals see the only proper remedy as affirmative action, or, discrimination against more qualified workers to boost up the numbers of a favored group.

Of course, the type of diversity that liberal-run corporations like Google do not allow is ideological diversity, the most important kind. We live in a society that demands complete and utter submission to whatever the liberal orthodoxy is at the time—allowing no questioning or dissent. Recently, an engineer at Google named James Moore found that out the hard way—he was fired for daring to disagree.

Last week, Moore sent out a memo to his colleagues at Google. The goal was twofold: (1) to call out Google’s “political bias” for “shaming into silence” any people who dissent from liberal ideas, and (2) to argue against the use of affirmative action in Google’s hiring to boost the numbers of women working there.

Both seem like straightforward conservative positions. First, Moore noted that conservatives often feel afraid to disagree with liberal colleagues. According to Moore, Google’s “silencing [of dissent] has created an ideological echo chamber.” Some ideas, then, “are too sacred to be honestly discussed,” and conservatives understand that they may be punished for disagreeing. As we have previously reported, this culture of silencing dissent is alive and well on many college campuses as well.

Second, Moore pointed to well-established scientific research that there may be some differences between the psychological preferences of men and women. What could be more obvious? He pointed to research showing that women, on average, may be more interested in interpersonal interactions, and men, on average, may be more interested in dealing with things—and this difference may explain why more men join engineering fields than do women. His shocking conclusion, then, was not to discriminate in hiring practices to boost female employee rates. Just let those people who are most interested in the jobs, whatever their gender, compete for the same spots. He also suggested some ways to make Google a more friendly work environment for women given their different tendencies.

How did Google respond to this memo? By reevaluating its culture of silencing conservatives and discriminating against men? By politely disagreeing and explaining why its policies are still for the best? Not even close. They issued a statement decrying the memo without responding to its substance, and then fired Moore for “perpetuating gender stereotypes.”

What?! They responded to a memo stating that alternative viewpoints are often silenced by literally silencing the author’s voice. This is why conservatives must stand up against suppression of speech on college campuses—because it is directly leading to suppression of speech in corporate America. Google is effectively telling all conservatives: shut up or we will fire you. If our culture stands by and accepts this sort of censorship in the public square, our country will quickly forget the benefits of free speech and true diversity—the ideological kind, which the Founding Fathers thought was essential for the survival of our republic.

Google claims that one of its founding values is “freedom of expression.” Well, apparently that freedom only exists for its employees who agree with it. That is no freedom at all; that is outright subjugation of alternative viewpoints, proving Moore’s memo to be correct in the first place.

Please stand with us in telling Google that this kind of behavior is not appropriate! If conservatives can lose their jobs for merely expressing disagreement, this is not the country we thought it was!

Don't fire based on viewpoints!

Dear Google,

While praising diversity of gender and other types of diversity, and employing affirmative action to obtain those types of diversity in your company, it seems that you care not at all for another equally important type of diversity: ideological. In fact, it seems that you responded to a memo from an employee, James Moore, describing the toxic culture of silencing dissent in your ranks by firing him. 

Moore noted that conservatives often feel afraid to disagree with liberal colleagues. According to Moore, your “silencing [of dissent] has created an ideological echo chamber.” Some ideas, then, “are too sacred to be honestly discussed,” and conservatives understand that they may be punished for disagreeing. 

Second, Moore pointed to well-established scientific research that there may be some differences between the psychological preferences of men and women. What could be more obvious?

A thoughtful, truly open-minded company would have responded by reevaluating its culture of silencing conservatives and discriminating against men or, at the very least, politely disagreeing and explaining why its policies are still for the best. But instead you issued a statement decrying the memo without responding to its substance, and then fired Moore for “perpetuating gender stereotypes.” 

I urge you to reconsider your position and discriminating against conservative viewpoints.  Your behavior in firing Moore is inappropriate. We demand that you reinstate him immediately and issue a statement noting that “freedom of expression” includes all expression—even if some other employees protest.

They have a right to protest—that’s their freedom of expression. But that doesn’t mean that viewpoints should be suppressed. We demand that you reverse course immediately!
