URGENT: The ACT Government's Hostile Takeover of Canberra's Calvary Hospital Threatens Both Life and Religious Freedom
Canberra is facing a grave threat to life and religious freedom with the ACT Labor Government brazenly launching a hostile takeover of the Catholic-run Calvary Hospital.The Sisters of the Little Company of Mary own Calvary Hospital, which has served the community now for 44 years. Never in that time has Calvary ever provided abortions. However, the government, when in control, will force the hospital to perform abortions against its historical ethical beliefs. This is a clear attack on religious freedom, property rights, and, most importantly, the sanctity of human life.
The ACT Labor government's agenda is clear: they want to force a Catholic hospital to abort babies through a forced takeover. The draft laws to seize the hospital were introduced into the ACT Legislative Assembly last week without any consultation with hospital owners, the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary. Neither was there consultation with the Calvary Hospital management, staff, or patients. The draft laws are going to be rammed through the Legislative Assembly and the proposed takeover timeframe is just barely over a month away, demonstrating a complete unwillingness on the part of the ACT Government to listen to its citizens. This abuse of power not only threatens the independence of Calvary Hospital but also sets a dangerous precedent for other faith-based institutions.
The ideological reason behind the acquisition is evident: the ACT government wants to force Calvary Hospital to provide abortion services, disregarding the hospital's conscientious objection based on the view that it is ethically wrong to intentionally end a human life. They may claim otherwise but the reality is that, just last month, a Labor/Greens-dominated inquiry into abortion in the ACT criticised Calvary Hospital as being “problematic … due to an overriding religious ethos.” If the government succeeds in taking over Calvary Hospital, it could target other faith, welfare, and community groups without consultation. This is a clear violation of our values as Australians.
We must act quickly as a vote in the ACT Legislative Assembly will take place on this matter soon, given the government wants to forcibly acquire the hospital by early July. For the sake of life, religious freedom, and property rights, we must demand that ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr and his Health Minister Rachel Stephen-Smith abandon their plans to seize the Calvary Hospital from the Sisters of the Little Company of Mary.
Together, we can protect the rights of religious institutions and ensure that they can continue to serve our communities in accordance with their beliefs and, in doing so, protect more babies from harm. We must tell the ACT Government to reject the acquisition of Calvary Hospital!
Remember: The consequences of this hostile takeover will be dire. More babies will be aborted in Canberra if the ACT Government gets away with its brazen bid to take over the Catholic-run Calvary Hospital by force. Once again, this is a clear violation of our values as Australians. We must stand up for religious freedom, property rights, and the right to life.

We see through the government's flimsy excuses for this hostile takeover and know that the real reason is so abortions can be procured at the hospital. This move then, is not only a violation of property rights and religious freedom, but also a clear violation of the right to life, which must be protected at all costs.
