The Saskatchewan NDP has introduced a bill to ban pro-lifers from protesting against abortion in any way around abortion facilities.

This bill, which is deceptively titled “Bill 605, An Act to Provide Safe Access to Abortion Services”, would create 150-metre “bubble zones” around abortion facilities in Saskatchewan. Anyone who attempts to dissuade someone from getting an abortion from within these bubble zones - be it through the use of images, slogans, or through their words - could be charged up to $5000. According to Global News, repeat offenders could face fines of up to $10,000 or even face jail time for one year.

Bubble zone legislation has been passed in Ontario, Alberta, Newfoundland, and British Columbia. The bill being proposed in Saskatchewan mirrors these legislations.

Bubble zones are motivated by the false idea that pro-life activists in Canada act violently towards pregnant women entering abortion clinics and people who work at abortion clinics. In reality, abortion-related violence is incredibly rare in Canada. For instance, the pro-abortion advocacy group Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada hasn’t documented a case of moderate or severe violence being perpetrated by pro-life protestors in Canada since July 2000. This false portrayal of pro-life activists does nothing but encourage hatred and violence towards pro-life activists.

Saskatchewan’s Justice Minister Gord Wyant told the legislative assembly that the government would need to review Bill 605 to make sure it complies with the Charter. However, Bill 605 is an inherent attack on our Charter rights. Canadian citizens have had their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly violated through bubble zones. Bubble zones specifically attack the freedoms of pro-life Canadians, and there is no violence being perpetrated by pro-life Canadians to justify this legislation.

The NDP in Saskatchewan want to put an end to sidewalk counsellors and peaceful pro-life protestors who carry signs and pray. These pro-abortion activists are willing to arrest peaceful Canadians to make women in crisis pregnancies less likely to choose life.

We need Scott Moe, the Premier of Saskatchewan and the leader of the Saskatchewan Party, to get all the politicians in the Saskatchewan Party to vote against Bill 605.

Stop Bill 605: Don't Use Bubble Zones to Ban Peaceful Assembly

Dear Premier Scott Moe,

I am deeply disturbed by the introduction of Bill 605, also known as “An Act to Provide Safe Access to Abortion Services”.

This bill is tyrannical, and directly attacks the rights of Canadians to peacefully assemble and express ourselves freely, which is granted to us by the Charter. Bill 605 would put “bubble zones” as large as 150-metres around abortion facilities, making it illegal to peacefully express pro-life viewpoints on public property in these areas.

All citizens of Saskatchewan should be able to express themselves freely in public, but Bill 605 would discriminate against a specific group of Saskatchewanians - those who hold pro-life viewpoints. Bill 605 would make it possible for people who are simply carrying signs peacefully to be fined or arrested, as we’ve seen happen in Ontario after they implemented bubble zones in 2018.

This bill is based on the false premise that the pro-life movement is violent and needs to be muzzled. This couldn’t be further from the truth. Even pro-abortion advocacy organization Abortion Rights Coalition of Canada hasn’t documented a case of moderate or severe violence being perpetrated by abortion protestors in Canada since July 2000.

Peaceful pro-life protestors and sidewalk counsellors help women in crisis pregnancies to make more informed decisions regarding their pregnancies. There are Canadians alive now who were not aborted in the womb because their mother saw a pro-life sign or a sidewalk counsellor at the right time.

Bill 605 does nothing but infringe upon the freedoms of peaceful protestors and take away information from women. I ask that you do all that is within your power to get all MLAs in the Saskatchewan Party to vote against Bill 605.
