Demand Quebec Government Reinstates Prayer Event
The government has canceled a private event simply because they disagree with the organizer's pro-life views. This directly attacks freedom of expression, and we must act before it's too late.
On June 2nd, Quebec Tourism Minister Caroline Proulx ordered the cancellation of a 10-day pro-life prayer event at the Quebec City Convention Center.
This decision was made without notifying the organizer and based on vague and arbitrary criteria.
By canceling this event, the government attempts to silence those with opposing views, which goes against the very foundation of democracy.
We cannot stand idly by while the government abuses its power. It is crucial to act swiftly in exposing the Quebec government's overreach to send Premier François Legault of Quebec and his government a message that we will not tolerate the suppression of opposing views. The Quebec government wants to keep its actions hidden from the rest of Canada, but by signing and sharing this petition, we can shine a light on their oppressive tactics.
If we don't act now, the government will be emboldened to cancel events based on ideological differences. This will further erode our fundamental rights and freedoms guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
English Translation of the Petition
To François Legault, Premier of Quebec; Caroline Proulx, Minister of Tourism; and Martine Biron, Minister of Women’s Affairs;
On Friday, June 2, French CBC reported that Quebec Tourism Minister Caroline Proulx had ordered the cancellation of a pro-life prayer event scheduled to take place from June 23 to July 2 at the Quebec City Convention Center. Organized by a pro-life Christian group, this event, which was to welcome 1000 people a day, was intended to pray for a positive change in Quebec and Canada in terms of abortion, family policy and governance in general.
We are outraged that Minister Proulx has decided in a completely authoritarian way that pro-life people should automatically be excluded from the public square in Quebec.
We are outraged that the government is now ordering the cancellation of events that convey opinions it does not like, based on criteria that are vague and arbitrary.
We, therefore, call on François Legault, Premier of Quebec, to reverse the decision of his Minister of Tourism, and to reinstate the event, if only to be consistent with his commitment to freedom of expression.
