We will stop the Istanbul Convention in the European Parliament
The European Parliament will vote on the EU's accession to the Council of Europe's Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (the so-called Istanbul Convention), at its September plenary session - in only a few days, on 12 September!
It is the duty of every civilized society to vigorously fight against all forms of violence against women and domestic violence. However, the so-called "Istanbul Convention" abuses this serious subject by introducing, for the first time, in international law a definition of gender and gender identity which is gender-independent.
Such a definition denies the natural gender differences between men and women, brings insecurity into the relationship between the same, and, ultimately, leads to a weakening of the protection of women against violence.
This petition, therefore, invites you to ask Members of the European Parliament, together, to vote against the proposed resolution, or to abstain from voting.
Please remind them that the fight against violence against women, assistance for its victims, and education, as part of the prevention of violence, are among the exclusive competences of the EU Member States. Joining the Istanbul Convention would, thus, violate the Lisbon Treaty and exceed the powers given to the European Parliament; such an action, would, in a few words, violate the rules set down for the European Parliament in successive treaties.
Nowadays, violence against women and domestic violence is a criminal offense in all the Member States of the European Union. However, only half of them have ratified the controversial Istanbul Convention, because many have serious doubts about its text.
If society loses the ability to distinguish who is a woman and who is a man, the fight against violence against women is only a formal commitment. Such superficial formalism does not, and, cannot, help victims of violence.
The only effective solution is education starting in childhood which teaches respect for the dignity of every person. The EU Member States are responsible for introducing such education. Together with local communities, churches and parents, they can design best practices and forms of education, while effectively protecting victims of violence and punishing offenders.
We believe that violence against women and children should be eradicated. But, the Council of Europe's Convention on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence does not, despite its name, serve this purpose.
Therefore, please, urge Members of the European Parliament not to approve the EU's accession to the Istanbul Convention.
