Thank the Governor for protecting free speech on campus in Tennessee!
All across the country, conservative speakers have been barred from presenting at colleges due to violent student protests. Many around the country have looked on in horror at these demonstrations and cancellations and urged college administrators to take action to restore order on campus and protect the free inquiry of truth.
Fortunately, Governor Haslam just signed a bill into law that will safeguard free speech on campus!

As the Daily Caller has reported, “The law will ban the establishment of ‘free speech zones,’ used by administrators to confine controversial speech to specific areas on campus.
“It will also force colleges to treat student-on-student harassment in accordance with the United States Supreme Court ruling on Davis vs. Monroe County Board of Education, which defined harassment as conduct ‘so severe, pervasive, and objectively offensive, and that so undermines and detracts from the victims’ educational experience, that the victim-students are effectively denied equal access to an institution’s resources and opportunities.’”
The law states, it “is not the proper role of an institution to attempt to shield individuals from free speech, including ideas and opinions they find offensive, unwise, immoral, indecent, disagreeable, conservative, liberal, traditional, radical or wrong-headed.”
Recently, several prominent conservatives have been physically prevented from speaking on campuses due to violent protests.
For example, at Pomona College in California, Manhattan Institute scholar Heather MacDonald was prevented from speaking on campus by student protests because she has been critical of some aspects of the Black Lives Matter movement. Student protesters physically barricaded the building where she was set to present and prohibited other students from listening to her address.
Similarly, protests at Middlebury College in Vermont against conservative scholar Charles Murray were so violent that one professor who was protecting Murray ended up in the hospital.
The students involved in these protests are selfish and immature. They have been coddled all their lives and do not respect the rights of others. For too long we have allowed these “snowflakes” to silence speech on campuses. It’s time that we legally protected free speech at public universities.
Students need to learn how to communicate and reason, not push and shout. It is essential for our societal order that the next generation learn how to engage with different ideas and speakers – even if they disagree. Discourse in our country is at an all time low, but through legal safeguards, we can protect speech on campuses and begin to change the culture in our country.
