Being a Christian of conviction in America is becoming increasingly difficult. It can feel as though there is constant pressure to conform to the new sexual ethic of total liberation.

Jack Phillips is a Christian baker in Colorado. He creates magnificent cakes that can only accurately be described as works of art. He declined to create a cake for a gay wedding ceremony because, as a Christian, he believes that marriage is only between one man and one woman. He was found guilty of discrimination by the state court in Colorado. The Supreme Court is hearing his case in June.

But recently, Phillips received a request to create a cake for Satan’s birthday. The request is clearly intended to intimidate and harass Philips for his Christian beliefs. Please support baker Jack Phillips who is being attacked and harassed for his Christian convictions. It is important that we support one another as we seek to resist the temptation to give into the culture.

Philips’ bakery is called Masterpiece Cakeshop and it is located in Lakewood, Colorado. The request to bake a cake for Satan’s birthday was vulgar and grotesque. The request was for an upside-down cross under the head of Satan.

Philips’ lawyer, Jeremy Tedesco, a senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, stated that, “The request for Jack to make a cake celebrating Satan proves the danger of using these kinds of laws to force people in the artistic profession to create artwork that violates their beliefs. The request from the Satanists is essentially the same as the request that Jack Phillips received from the same-sex couple to create a cake that violates his beliefs, because in both instances, the requester can say the law covers my request. For the Satanists, they’re going to say it’s religious discrimination for you to say no to a cake that I’m requesting because of my protected status.”

The purpose of this request was to harass an already harassed man. However, this request to bake a cake for Satan demonstrates why Philips should win his case at the Supreme Court. His desire to decline from creating cakes for same-sex weddings is the same as his desire to decline to create a cake celebrating Satan’s birthday –both violate his religious convictions.

In the midst of such a difficult time, let’s stand behind Philips and support him. We should stand shoulder to shoulder with one another in order to resist the pressure to conform to an increasingly hostile and secular culture.

Dear Jack Philips,

Being a Christian of conviction in America is becoming increasingly difficult. It can feel as though there is constant pressure to conform to the new sexual ethic of total liberation.

It appears there is immense pressure on you to conform due to your Christian convictions.

You were found guilty of discrimination by the state court in Colorado for declining to create a cake for a gay wedding. This is due to your Christian belief in marriage.

Recently, you received a request to create a cake for Satan’s birthday. The request is clearly intended to intimidate and harass you for your Christian beliefs.

We want you to know that we see what you are going through and we stand with you in solitary. Thank you for your integrity and willingness to face fines and harassment rather than compromise on what is right. We need more Christians like you.
