There is immense pressure on Christians to conform to the liberal sexual ethic of our society and celebrate gay marriage. During the summer, gay pride parades and celebrations shut down traffic in nearly all major cities and LGBTQ rhetoric and imagery dominated the advertising campaigns of major corporations. With so much pressure, it can begin to feel extremely oppressive. How is a Christian supposed to remain faithful to God’s word under so much pressure?
But when we stand together, we are a strong and powerful voice for the truth. Fortunately, we now have a compassionate, clear, and articulate statement to stand behind – the Nashville Statement.
Recently, the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood (CBMW) released the Nashville statement, which outlines what the Bible clearly says about sexuality. The statement has been signed by 150 Christian leaders and shared and posted by thousands of others. Signers of this important statement include John Piper, James Dobson, Russell Moore, R. Albert Mohler, Jr., Sam Allberry, John MacArthur, Mark Dever, and Matt Chandler.
Please join with these strong, courageous Christians in affirming what the Bible teaches about biblical sexuality!
The preamble to the statement affirms that, “We are persuaded that faithfulness in our generation means declaring once again the true story of the world and of our place in it—particularly as male and female. Christian Scripture teaches that there is but one God who alone is Creator and Lord of all. To him alone, every person owes glad-hearted thanksgiving, heart-felt praise, and total allegiance. This is the path not only of glorifying God, but of knowing ourselves. To forget our Creator is to forget who we are, for he made us for himself. And we cannot know ourselves truly without truly knowing him who made us. We did not make ourselves. We are not our own. Our true identity, as male and female persons, is given by God. It is not only foolish, but hopeless, to try to make ourselves what God did not create us to be.”
Article 1 of the Nashville Statement declares, “We affirm that God designed marriage to be a covenantal, sexual, procreative, lifelong union of one man and one woman, as husband and wife, which is meant to signify the covenantal love between Christ and his bride the church. We deny that God has designed marriage to be a homosexual, polygamous, or polyamorous relationship. We also deny that marriage is a mere human contract rather than a covenant made before God.”
As expected, there has been significant backlash to the Nashville statement by the left. Some are calling the Nashville Statement hateful. Of course, nothing could be further from the truth. Albert Mohler, President of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, wrote a column for the Washington Post defending the statement. He argued that the statement was released as an act of love for same-sex attracted people. He argued, “in releasing the Nashville Statement, we in fact are acting out of love and concern for people who are increasingly confused about what God has clarified in Holy Scripture.”
The truth is that the sexual revolution has many victims and our churches need to be places where refugees from this destructive worldview can turn for restoration and renewal. We need to offer Christ’s forgiveness and grace in love while never compromising what He has taught – that marriage is a union between a man and a woman that is meant to reflect the love of Christ for the church.
Let’s stand as one unified voice. Together, we must affirm the Nashville Statement. Please sign this affirmation and share the Nashville Statement on social media. America must be reminded what the Bible teaches about human sexuality.
