There’s good news in California. Democratic Governor Jerry Brown has vetoed a bill aimed at silencing Christians and pro-life activists. Assembly Bill 569, would have made it illegal for a Christian California employer to discipline or fire employees in accordance with any kind of a moral or ethical code surrounding sex.

This bill would have been devastating to religious liberty and it is a huge relief and victory that Governor Brown has vetoed it! Please thank the Governor for standing up to his own party by vetoing a bill that would have been destructive to Christian organizations in California.

As the National Review has reported, Assembly Bill 569 or the Reproductive Health Non-Discrimination Act, would have made it illegal for a California employer to discipline or fire employees for “their reproductive health decisions, including, but not limited to, the timing thereof, or the use of any drug, device, or medical service.” 

“A hospital could not fire a media-relations director for appearing in a public-interest story on the local news station to discuss her experience with in vitro fertilization. A pro-life crisis-pregnancy center could not fire a counselor for “shouting her abortion” for a Planned Parenthood video. And a private Christian school could not fire a pregnant, unmarried, abstinence-education teacher.” (Source: National Review)

Religious liberty is under attack in America. According to the anti-religious left, a Christian organization trying to exist in the public square is a grave threat to our society. Never mind that Christians living out their faith aren’t hurting anyone, but merely exercising their God-given right, which is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

The mainstream media and the progressive left apparently no longer believe in this right, and are attacking religious liberty on every front. Newspapers only ever discuss “religious liberty” with scare quotes, as if it were some nefarious term. States are punishing private individuals who decline to participate in same-sex wedding ceremonies on religious grounds. As we have reported before: bakers, florists, photographers, and farm owners are all being coerced by the state to violate their religion! The federal government has even tried to force nuns to provide contraception against their will.

An affront to religious liberty anywhere is a threat to all of us. But fortunately, Governor Brown has vetoed a potentially devastating bill. We should take note and give credit where credit is due. Thank the Governor for standing up to his own party and the extreme Left.
