Arrested for being pro-life: Stand by Red Rose Rescuers as they help save the preborn
On December 2, 2017, at least 13 pro-lifers in 3 cities across the US - in Alexandria, VA, in Washington, DC, and in Bloomfield Township/Detroit, MI - simultaneously entered abortion centers, with the intention of encouraging women who had scheduled abortions to change their minds and choose life.
Their name, Red Rose Rescuers, comes from the red roses which the Rescuers distribute to women in the abortion centers, along with information about life-affirming alternatives, attached.
In addition to offering encouragement, the Red Rose Rescuers also offer material assistance, as well.
And, uniting themselves in solidarity with the unborn, the Rescuers give non-violent, passive resistance when the police are called, declining to leave the premises.
But, just so it's clear: these rescues do not involve obstructing entrances of abortion centers, or operating rooms within abortion centers. When police officers are called to an abortion center, the Red Rose Rescuers respond by trying to continue conversation with women, or by sitting on the floor until detained, often quietly praying or singing hymns.
In total, 11 Rescuers were arrested on December 2nd, including Fr. Stephen Imbarrato (a priest who works with Priests for Life), Dr. Monica Miller (Director of Citizens for a Pro-Life Society), and Lauren Handy (Founder of Mercy Missions in Alexandria, VA).
And now, like Mary Wagner (the Canadian Red Rose Rescuer), these American Red Rose Rescuers face legal trouble.
Of course, this is something which the Rescuers are willing to accept in order to save lives and, also, in order to bring about a greater awareness to this lethal injustice taking place in the United States, where very few will advocate on behalf of the unborn in these places of darkness and death.
But, these Rescuers bring light and life. And, we know, from witness statements, that at the Washington, DC rescue, 2 abortion-minded women actually changed their minds and chose life!
Even still, some may object to this method. So, it may be well to consider what one, legendary American human rights proponent had to say about the distinction between just and unjust laws. Writing in his Letter from a Birmingham Jail (1963), Martin Luther King, Jr. wrote the following:
"One may well ask: "How can you advocate breaking some laws and obeying others?" The answer lies in the fact that there are two types of laws: just and unjust. I would be the first to advocate obeying just laws. One has not only a legal but a moral responsibility to obey just laws. Conversely, one has a moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws. I would agree with St. Augustine that "an unjust law is no law at all."
Thankfully, we have a long history of opposing unjust laws in the United States - even going back to the reason why some of the first settlers came to America...and, later, during the Civil Rights movement.
Bringing us up to today, however, we have now entered Advent, and see that Christmas is not far away. So, in the pro-life spirit of the Season, we want to send these Red Rose Rescuers some prayerful encouragement. The Rescuers who were arrested in Alexandria, VA go to court on December 11th; the "DC Three" go to court on December 28th; and, those arrested in Detroit also face court proceedings on December 20th.
Please sign our letter to all of the Red Rose Rescuers, thanking them for their dedication to protecting the lives of unborn children at the cost of her own liberty. We will send this letter and the signatures to Fr. Imbarrato, Dr. Miller, and Ms. Lauren Handy on behalf of all of the Rescuers.
Thank you!
