University of Minnesota: Offer no stage to advocates of eugenic abortion
University of Minnesota professor David M. Perry wrote recently that: “it’s time to affirmatively support the right to eugenic abortion, even as we fight the need for it. “
“If individuals want to terminate an otherwise wanted pregnancy due to a prenatal diagnosis, I support their decision.”
The University of Minnesota should offer no stage to advocates of eugenic abortion. Please sign this petition demanding they stand down Professor Perry.
If there is a so-called “right to eugenic abortion" it means there must also be a right to eugenics.
Eugenics has an unwelcome place amongst the darkest periods of human history, including the Action T4 euthanasia program launched in Germany in 1939 that listed Down syndrome as a life unworthy of life, but worthy of eugenic eradication. Action T4 commenced with the killing of disabled children, including those with Down syndrome, and ultimately resulted in the death of over 85,000 disabled people. Perpetuators of the eugenics program were found guilty of crimes against humanity at the Doctors’ Trial, a crime that includes the systematic killing of those deemed “unworthy of life”.
Modern eugenics against the Down syndrome community comprises of eugenic abortion. In China, Denmark, Iceland, Belgium, France and Switzerland the abortion rate is close to 100% after Down syndrome is diagnosed in pregnancy. Statistics over many years have shown an increase in acceptance of pregnancy screening and eugenic abortion based on disability around the world. The purpose and outcomes of eugenics has not changed. The purpose remains to remove the disabled, those deemed "unworthy of life”, from society. The tools have simply moved to prenatal eradication through eugenic abortion.
The near eradication of people with Down syndrome is organized and funded through public and private health care programs. While these expensive screening programs do not offer health-benefits or treatment, families with Down syndrome are forced to help fund these programs through public health or collective insurances.
Professor Perry spreads a dangerous agenda of hate and persecution against the Down syndrome community that knowingly results in a dramatic reduction of births based on identifiable genetic traits in otherwise wanted pregnancies. This not only reduces birth numbers of a minority group of our human family, it also reinforces a cycle of extreme discrimination against those living with the condition, whose lives are viewed as being of less worth than others and whose lives should have been prevented.
Eugenics has no place in civilized, progressive and inclusive societies that celebrate human diversity and the inherent dignity of all. Join Saving Down Syndrome in urging the University of Minnesota to offer no stage to advocates of eugenic abortion and stand down professor David M. Perry for actively affirming a “right” to eugenic abortion.”
