Thank Ashton Kutcher and his Netflix show for refusing to glorify abortions!
In our culture, we have gotten so used to constant pro-choice and pro-abortion messages. Hollywood especially often glorifies or makes light of abortions—in shows and movies that shape the hearts and minds of our children.
Thankfully, then, there has finally been a plot in a Netflix show that deals with an unplanned pregnancy honestly—recognizing the difficulties such a pregnancy can present, but also recognizing the value of the life growing inside the unexpected mother. And that show is Ashton Kutcher’s “The Ranch.”
Please join me in thanking Ashton Kutcher and the whole “The Ranch” team for bucking the Hollywood norm by producing such a real and pro-life episode.
In the Season 3 premiere of “The Ranch” on Netflix, Ashton Kutcher’s character, Colt, and his girlfriend, Heather, discover that she is pregnant. After recovering from the shocking news, Colt encourages Heather—telling her she will be a great mother, he’ll be a great dad, and they’ll be a great family. He then commits to her and the baby, proposing on the spot and promising that “this kid will absolutely be my first priority.”
But Heather stops him and tells him she plans on getting an abortion.
She tells Colt she’s too young to be a mom and relates the real difficulties of raising children alone. Colt responds that he will be there with her, and says that they’ll have to make sacrifices and everything will now be “about this kid.” Colt tells Heather an abortion would be “wrong” and would be the “easy way out.”
Finally, after making the trip all the way to the abortion clinic, Heather has a change of heart! In the clinic, she turns to Colt, “I can’t. I can’t do this. I thought it’s what I wanted but, now that I’m here and it’s all happening…” she could not go through with allowing a doctor to end the life of their child—or as Colt calls her, their “kid.”
Rather than praising abortion or downplaying its significance by pretending that it does not do what it scientifically does—end the life of a child—this episode of “The Ranch” explores the difficulties of unplanned pregnancies while still seeing value in protecting life. Heather’s life will change and raising a child will be difficult, yes, but this new life will also bring Heather and Colt closer together, provide new meaning for their lives, and brighten the world in its own special way.
Let’s thank Ashton Kutcher and “The Ranch” for portraying such a tough real-world situation and not taking the cop out of accepting the liberal sexual ethic status quo—praising all things abortion. Rather, they showed the real consequences of unwed intercourse and the real challenges of unplanned pregnancy, but also saw the real beauty of every unique human life.
We know that Heather made the right decision—to save her baby’s life. Now, as a result of the show, more mothers will see that it is the right decision for them, too!
