Show Your Support for Public School Sex Ed Parental Notice
California Senate Bill 217 is a common-sense transparency measure that brings parental notice requirements on sex education into the 21st Century. For more than 20 years, PJI has advised and assisted countless parents in understanding their rights under the California Education Code to stay informed and involved with their children’s education.
Routinely, California parents are stymied in their attempts to access what their children are being taught in one of the most sensitive areas of instruction—sexuality. California school districts routinely fail to provide the notices of upcoming sexual education required by law, make available only a portion of the curriculum, omit the mention of controversial speakers, and force parents to secure our legal representation in order to obtain information that should already be provided to them.
Most California parents agree that their children need to be taught at least the biology of “the birds and the bees” in order to become safe and responsible young adults. Yet all too often, we have seen school districts take an antagonistic approach in an area that is highly controversial if not handled carefully. And we have seen instruction that, rather than encouraging students to be responsible, actually pushes them to engage in highly risky sexual behaviors in early adolescence.
This bill would require the governing board of a school district to adopt a policy at a publicly noticed meeting specifying how parents and guardians of pupils may inspect the written and audiovisual educational materials used in comprehensive sexual health education. In addition, the meetings would address any new HIV prevention education, including updates or changes to present materials.
This is a bill that protects children and parents alike. Let California Governor Gavin Newsom know you support SB 217 by signing the petition.
