California Hurting Victims While Protecting Self Interests

They’re at it again! The California General Assembly is ready to break our Constitution and your help is needed to stop them. We have only few days to persuade Governor Jerry Brown to veto Senate Bill 131.

The 14th Amendment to the U.S. Federal Constitution establishes the absolute equality of rights and obligations to all citizens. If Senate Bill 131 is signed into law by Governor Jerry Brown, a child that was a victim of sexual abuse at a public school has fewer legal rights than a victim at a private school. Is California putting the focus on private institutes to avoid responsibility for the actions of public institutes? Sexual abuse is an awful crime; all perpetrators should be held accountable for their actions and this law does not for that allow that.

The California General Assembly, overwhelmingly control by the Democratic Party and influenced by Liberal Special Interest Groups has passed a law that targets religious organizations like the Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts. In passing this legislation, the California General Assembly has disregarded the rights of children that were victims at public institutions and other groups that California has financially invested in.

By signing this petition today, you are asking Governor Jerry Brown to veto this legislation, asking them of provide all victims of sexual abuse the same rights for justice.

Furthermore, in Senate Bill 131, there is a provision that eliminates statute of limitation for one year after the legislation starts. A similar provision was enacted in 2003, resulting in over 1,000 separate lawsuits against the Catholic Church, some for alleged crimes that were committed in the 1950s. In 2003, compensation amounts reached nearly $1.2 billion. The Wall Street Journal describes the behavior of the California General Assembly as an attack on their enemies, particularly the Catholic Church and the Boy Scouts, allowing tort lawyers to collect hundreds of millions in dollars in fees, much like in 2003.

Kevin Eckery, spokesman for the California Conference of Catholic Bishops, said this legislation allows cases to be heard for a second or third time and could leave them without funds to operate schools.

California Governor Jerry Brown, has an opportunity to do the right thing, veto this bill. Send him an alert today and tell him that Senate Bill unjustly targets private institutes, while public institutes are not being held accountable.

Petition to: Governor Jerry Brown

Governor Brown veto S.B. 131!

Governor Jerry Brown, the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Federal Constitution establishes the absolute equality of rights and obligations to all citizens. However, California Senate Bill 131 “Damages: Childhood Sexual Abuse: Statute of Limitations” that was just passed in the General Assembly sets different obligations for public schools, universities, and groups and unfairly targets private institutions, churches, and groups, such as the Boy Scouts.

Under this legislation, why can victims of sexual abuse sue Stanford University or a Catholic school, but not the University of Berkeley or the public school system? The difference in treatment is so blatant that leads one to wonder if the Democratic Party wants to harm institutions and organizations that have different values than them.

We ask you to veto S.B. 131, victims of sexual abuse at public institutions should be afforded the same rights as those at private institutions.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
