URGENT! Ashers Bakery in court against the Equality Commission TODAY!

Erratum - Apologies! I mistakenly wrote that the hearing against Ashers Baking Co was going to be heard by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. I was wrong. The Equality Commission is the body taking the McArthur Family (and Ashers Baking Co) to court, where the hearing and judgment will be rendered. I have now adjusted this information page and the petition to that effect. The principles of the case still remain the same, however - we still want justice for Ashers. And, we want to make the point to the Equality Commission that in their pursuit of political correctness, they have trampled on the freedoms of speech, religion, thought and conscience, all in one go.

URGENT! Please sign this petition and share with your friends, family and like-minded colleagues!

Ashers Baking Co will be taken to court by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland TODAY!, and the circumstances of their case indicate that they have a chance of overcoming this legal challenge.

This petition - addressed to the Chief of the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland - is an urgent plea for fairness and justice in this case. In the petition, we call on the Chief to reflect on the importance of freedom of conscience and the right not to advocate for a cause which is not in keeping with one's conscience.

We also ask that this legal action not be a mere formality along the way to arriving at a pre-arranged conclusion which supports the view of the minority.

A little background information on this story: In May of 2014, Ashers Baking Co (the name 'Ashers' refers to one of the twelve Tribes of Israel), a family-run, Christian business was asked to decorate a cake with the words, "Support Gay Marriage". They refused to fulfill the order, citing their Christian beliefs. Because they adhered to their Christian principles, they subsequently found themselves embroiled in this legal challenge, which has stirred stong feelings about the freedoms of thought, speech and expression, across Northern Ireland and around the world.

Right now, the McArthur Family (the family who own and operate Ashers) are getting ready to face a stressful court hearing taken by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. The McArthurs have been faithful and courageous in the face of this challenge. And, thankfully, they have not faced it alone.

Thousand of people from all over Ireland and the UK came to Belfast a couple of nights ago (Tuesday night) to support Ashers Bakery (and the McArthurs) in their struggle to have their freedom of conscience respected. And, a new poll shows that 71% of the people of Northern Ireland support Ashers in this dispute.

But, because of the effect of rulings of the same type, on international jurisprudence, the Ashers case also has wider implications - at very minimum, the case has the potential to affect law in the rest of the UK, as well as in the Republic of Ireland...and, very likely, further afield.

Therefore, it is in the interest of everyone - living in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, the rest of the UK, the US, the EU, Australia, Canada, and elsewhere - to support the McArthur Family and Ashers in this very urgent plea for justice!

Before the day is out TODAY, please sign and share this petition. Thank you!

Support freedom of conscience

Dear Dr Wardlow,

I am writing to you with a sense of urgency, especially given the fact that you are the head of the Equality Commission, the body taking the case against Ashers Baking Co.

From the point of view of any thinking person, this case can only be seen as a purely political manifestation. Given what appear to be the very straight-forward circumstances of the case, the claims of discrimination, based on sexual orientation, seem groundless.

Moreover, it seems to me that if the court rules in favour of Mr Lee (the plaintiff/the claimant), you will have been a key element in setting a precedent which says that alleged discrimination (as yet undefined) trumps the absolute right of an individual not to support a cause with which they fundamentally disagree. Will this apply only to Christians, or will you apply this "standard" equally, across the board?

If, by the ruling of the courts, a new kind of hierarchy of rights is established, where one person's sensitivity and sexual preference takes precedence over another person's absolute right not to advocate for a particular cause, you will be guilty of trampling on one of the most basic freedoms: the right to live according to the dictates of ones own conscience.

This would be a grave injustice, not just for Ashers, but for men and women of all faiths, and none. This would be a blow against democracy, human dignity, and frankly, against civilisation, too. After all, we live in a society where the rights of the majority must also be respected and esteemed as worthy of value.

I, therefore, call on you, as Chief Commissioner, to assist in reaching a fair and just outcome for all men and women of Northern Ireland. I call on you to resist the illiberal voices which one hears coming from different LGBT lobby groups, and which expect the courts to deliver you a fait accompli in their favour. Rather, I ask you to please support freedom of conscience of Ashers Baking Co and others in the future.

Sincerely,
[Your Name]
