For the inclusion of a 'Conscientious Objection' clause into the proposed 34th Amendment to the Irish Constitution

Without a 'Conscientious Objection' clause in the proposed 34th Amendment to the Irish Constitution people who are not in favour of Gay Marriage will be required by law to support and endorse Gay Marriage or risk prosecution. This petition seeks to encourage the Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald to accept that people of all faiths believe that marriage is a divinely ordained state of union between a man and woman. If the 34 Amendment is passed without a 'Conscientious Objection' clause, people of faith, who teach that marriage is between a man and a woman are potentially criminalised.

Petition to: Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald TD

Petition in Opposition to the Thirty-Fourth Amendment of the Constitution on Marriage Equality, (Marriage Equality Bill 2015)

We the undersigned, for reasons of faith, consider the state of marriage the exclusive province of a man and a woman. This is the understanding of all revealed religions. The current wording of the Thirty-Fourth amendment of the Constitution on Marriage Equality and Implementation Bill not only allows for same-sex marriage, but obliges all citizens and residents of Ireland to endorse same-sex marriage or potentially face prosecution.

“Marriage may be contracted in accordance of the law by two persons without distinction as to their sex” (proposed amendment to article 41 of the Constitution).

We therefore respectfully request that the Minister for Justice and Equality Frances Fitzgerald TD, provide for and safeguard the right of people on grounds of ‘conscience’ to abstain from endorsing same-sex marriages while in employment, worship or through social interaction.
