Romanian Government: Help the Mother and the Child With a New Pregnancy Allowance!
Thankfully, the abortion rate has been declining in Romania in recent years, but, for a very long time, abortion was effectively used as a form of contraception, there.
Romania is near the top of an infamous list, for the number of abortions as related to its population (only Russia has a higher proportion of abortions-to-total-pregnancies). Between the years 1958 and 2016, over 22,832,600 surgical abortions took place in Romanian state-run hospitals. This compares to a present population of roughly 19,237,500 today.
Indeed, in the first so-called "liberalisation" years, between 1958-1966, the proportion of abortions-to-total-pregnancies was often above 70%, even hitting a shocking 80% in 1965. And then, just after the fall of communism, in 1990 and 1991, the rate, again, spiked up to 76% for both years.
But, now, with the benefit of ultrasound technology, everybody can see the living, moving human being in utero. And so, more and more people are coming to recognise the humanity of the unborn child.
Yes, abortion stops a beating heart (which starts beating at just 21 days after conception!), but it also tears apart a woman's life, and the life of an entire nation.
So, even one abortion is too many!
And, that's why, these days, Romanians are now marching - in their thousands! - for Life!
This year, on 25th March, the March for Life 2017 will take place in a record 130 Romanian and Moldovan towns and cities, with the theme of "Help the Mother and the Child! They Depend on You."
The huge increase in local marches is extraordinary, growing every year since the event began, seven years ago, in 2011. In fact, even since 2014, the number of local marches has increased from 40 marches in Romania, then, to 110 in Romania and 20 in Moldova, today!!!
And, more importantly, it appears that the hopeful message of Life is breaking-through to the Romanian public. Thankfully, Romania's abortion rate has declined steadily since 2011, from 34%, to 26% in 2015 (the last year statistics are available).
But, Romania has an opportunity to make even the thought of abortion, unthinkable.
How? By taking collective responsibility to ensuring that every expectant mother has everything she needs to carry her baby to term.
In effect, the Romanian people must work to remove the "crisis" from a "crisis pregnancy", so that the thought of resorting to abortion won't even be an option.
To that end, the organisers of this year's March for Life are, among other things, calling on the Romanian Government to create a new "Pregnancy Allowance" which would become available to pregnant women at their 14th week of pregnancy.
Very often a crisis is brought about by coercion of one form or another, or when feelings of desperation take over. The proposed "Pregnancy Allowance", which would be designed to alleviate such crises, would help enormously in a woman's decision to carry the pregnancy to term, rather than procure an abortion.
Society should rally round a woman in this situation, to the extent possible, so that the expecting mother will make the right decision, and choose Life.
Thank you for your serious consideration. Expectant mothers and their unborn children, as well as the future of Romanian society, will thank you for encouraging your politicians to do the right thing, and create this special "Pregnancy Allowance".
Thank you for signing this petition!
