Tell Georgetown University: Students must be allowed to uphold the Christian view of marriage!
Georgetown University was founded by devout Jesuits with the purpose of glorifying God. In fact, Georgetown is the oldest Catholic and Jesuit institution in America.
However, even at Georgetown University, Christian students are under immense pressure to be silent about what the Bible teaches about marriage. Over the last week and a half many students at Georgetown have been fighting hard to force the university to shut down the student group Love Saxa because the group is committed to upholding the Biblical view of marriage.
You read correctly, this week, students at Georgetown almost lost the ability to formally organize together in order to promote marriage. Fortunately, early this morning the Student Activities Commission voted to recommend, “no action against the group in response to a complaint alleging the group’s stance on marriage fosters hatred and intolerance.”
This recommendation is subject to appeal to the Georgetown’s Director of Student Engagement, Amanda Carlton –she is free to either accept or reject this recommendation. It is critical that students at Georgetown keep the ability to meet together to stand for marriage! Please sign this petition to Amanda Carlton asking her to affirm the vote of the commission!
Why are students fighting to silence Love Saxa? Because the mission of Love Saxa is “cultivating a proper understanding of sex, gender, marriage, and family” on campus. As the Georgetown student newspaper the Hoya reports, “the club’s programming — including discussions, lectures and public campaigns — are intended to increase awareness of the benefits of the “primacy of marriage,” “understood as a monogamous and permanent union between a man and a woman.”
As Tyson Langhofer of ADF has stated, “To call for the derecognition of a student organization at a Catholic university because it holds to Catholic views on marriage is preposterous. It’s not enough that many of those who don’t hold to conservative religious or political views are seeking to silence those with whom they disagree on public university campuses and elsewhere in the public square. Now they are even seeking to silence them at private, religious universities, which are unquestionably free to recognize student clubs that adhere to the universities’ own founding values. Georgetown should act consistently with its own Catholic identity and reject any request for Love Saxa to be derecognized.”
There is immense pressure on Christians to conform to the liberal sexual ethic of our society and celebrate gay marriage. During the summer, gay pride parades and celebrations shut down traffic in nearly all major cities and LGBTQ rhetoric and imagery dominated the advertising campaigns of major corporations. With so much pressure, it can begin to feel extremely oppressive. How is a Christian supposed to remain faithful to God’s word under so much pressure?
But when we stand together, we are a strong and powerful voice for the truth.
Please sign this petition to Georgetown University asking them to allow their Catholic students to organize a club that holds to Catholic teachings on marriage.
