Petition: NASA bans "Jesus"

NASA has barred the Johnson Space Center (JSC) Praise and Worship Club from using the word “Jesus” in their JSC Today newsletter announcements.

The Praise and Worship Club gives NASA employees at the Johnson Space Center an opportunity to pray and worship together. The club has been meeting for over 14 years and they’ve never had any issues with censorship in the past. But in May 2015 they asked to put the following advertisement in the JSC Today newsletter:

Join with the praise and worship band “Allied with the Lord” for a refreshing set of spring praise and worship songs on Thursday, June 4, from 11:15 a.m. to noon in Building 57, Room 106. (The theme for this session will be “Jesus is our life!”) Prayer partners will be available for anyone who has need. All JSC civil servants and contractors are welcome.

NASA took offense at the club’s use of the word “Jesus.” They blocked the ad and the club received an order to stop using the word Jesus in all future advertisements.

According to the club’s attorney from the Liberty Institute, Jeremy Dys, the club leaders were told that “NASA would be censoring all future club announcements that featured the name, ‘Jesus’.”

This is religious discrimination and it runs contrary to our God-given and Constitutionally protected freedom of religion.

The club even offered to include a disclaimer that the ad was not endorsed by NASA, but their request was still denied.

As Todd Starnes points out in The Stream, “NASA’s behavior is quite frankly baffling. On Christmas Eve, 1968 — the crew of Apollo 8 read the Creation story as they orbited the moon. Astronauts Jim Lovell, Frank Borman and Bill Anders took turns reading from the Book of Genesis. NASA defended the astronauts after atheist Madalyn Murray O’Hair filed a federal lawsuit. The Supreme Court dismissed the suit due to lack of jurisdiction. And astronaut Buzz Aldrin received communion on the lunar surface during the 1969 Apollo 11 mission.”

Our country is truly in a sad state if those who study the skies are not even allowed to mention the name of the Creator of the sky.

NASA has fallen prey to the incorrect progressive and liberal interpretation of the the establishment clause... an interpretation that bars government employees from all displays of faith, even those that are voluntary or private. This interpretation is false and unconstitutional.

Sign this petition asking NASA to apologize and stop censoring the name Jesus.

Allow Jesus at NASA

Dear NASA representatives,

I recently became aware of your censorship of the word “Jesus” in the JSC Today Newsletter. This censorship is both inappropriate and unconstitutional.

Last summer, the Johnson Space Center Praise and Worship Club asked to include an advertisement in the newsletter for their lunchtime prayer and worship time. Their request was denied because the ad mentioned the name “Jesus.”

This is religious discrimination and your demand that the group refrain from using the word Jesus runs contrary to the club members’ God-given and Constitutionally protected freedom of religion. Allowing the club to use the word “Jesus” is not a violation of the establishment clause.

Please issue an apology and stop censoring the name Jesus.

Thank you.
