In 2016 Medical Assistance in Dying (MAiD), a euphemism for euthanasia,  became legal in Canada.  In 2021 a further amendment was added that removed the provision “reasonably foreseeable” for terminally ill patients, which opened the door for MAiD to be offered for patients whose only underlying condition was mental illness.

In December 2022 news broke of a Canadian veteran being offered MAiD as a solution to his PTSD.  This was unprompted by the veteran, who went on to file a complaint with Veterans Affairs (VA).  Since then more veterans have come forward indicating that they too were offered the same solution.  Veterans Affairs Minister, Lawrence MacAulay, has indicated that this is not a policy of Veterans Affairs and that it was a “rogue” agent who was responsible for most of the complaints filed.  That agent has since been let go from the agency.  But even more veterans have come forward since, including Paralympian Christine Gauthier, who said she originally called VA to ask for assistance in retrofitting her home with a wheelchair ramp and instead was offered MAiD.

Lawrence MacAulay has apologized and has reiterated that it is not a policy of VA to offer veterans MAiD, unless the veteran first asks for it, at which time they can receive information and assistance.

Canadians' eyes are finally starting to open to the devastating effects that MAiD has had on our country.  Now, more than ever, is our time to tell our politicians that this is unacceptable.  That we love and respect our veterans and want them to receive the best possible care available,  not to be offered to be killed for mental illnesses received while fighting to protect our freedoms.  Please consider signing this petition, asking Veterans Affairs Minister Lawrence MacAulay to stand up for our veterans, to put an end to the practice of offering our veterans MAiD and to help them find real solutions to their suffering.

Stop Veterans Affairs from offering MAiD to our Soldiers

Honourable Lawrence MacAulay,

In lieu of the recent news that Veterans Affairs officers have been offering MAiD to our Canadian Soldiers, who, seeking real solutions to real issues, have instead been offered that death might be the best solution, we implore you to put an end to this practice.

We appreciate that you have apologized to the individual veterans affected so far, but more needs to be done to ensure that this never happens again.

Please take the necessary steps to ensure that our veterans are offered nothing but the best assistance, especially when struggling with mental illness such as PTSD, or simply calling for help with physical needs, like wheelchair ramps.

We love our Veterans and all they have done and do for us as Canadians.  Please stop offering them MAiD as a solution to their problems and needs.
