PEÇA ÀS AUTORIDADES CHINESAS A LIBERTAÇÃO IMEDIATA DO BISPO PETER SHAO
Autoridades chinesas detiveram e transferiram um bispo da Igreja Católica, Peter Shao Zhumin, para um lugar distante de sua diocese porque, após a morte do bispo de sua diocese (bispo Zhu), o bispo Shao deveria se tornar o novo bispo e administrador de Zhejiang (Wenzhou) - que conta com uma população de 120.000 habitantes.
Por qual "crime" o bispo Shao foi detido e levado "em uma viagem" pela polícia (de acordo com Asianews.it)?
A resposta é que ele foi designado bispo pelo Vaticano, e não pela "Associação Patriótica Católica Chinesa", controlada pelo Partido Comunista, o que fez dele um bispo da chamada "Igreja clandestina" aos olhos das autoridades.
Aceitava-se, contudo, que, mesmo "não oficial", o bispo Shao servisse abertamente como bispo coadjutor (ou seja, bispo assistente) do falecido bispo Zhu, que fazia parte da igreja "oficial".
Esse fato era bastante conhecido pelas autoridades há pelo menos 5 anos
De qualquer modo, a prisão e o exílio do bispo Shao é uma ação lamentável no que diz respeito à liberdade religiosa.
A perseguição de cristãos e de outras minorias religiosas, assim como os programas sistemáticos que buscam tirar os símbolos cristãos dos ambientes - como a demolição de 1.200 cruzes na província de Zhejiang - precisa acabar.
E especificamente no caso do bispo Shao, a China precisa reconhecer que o Vaticano é a sede espiritual e jurídica da Igreja Católica Romana.
Dom Shao foi nomeado legitimamente pela Igreja Católica Romana e tem o direito e o dever de conduzir o rebanho de fiéis na Diocese de Zhejiang (Wenzhou).
Portanto, esta petição faz duas reivindicações:
1) Por meio de seu ministério de relações exteriores (ou seja, dos embaixadores junto à UE e aos EUA), ela pede às autoridades chinesas que devolvam Dom Shao a sua diocese, de modo que ele possa ser instituído como o sucessor do falecido Dom Zhu.
2) Pede ao Embaixador dos EUA para a Liberdade Religiosa e ao Embaixador da UE junto à China que considerem iniciar investigações desse caso por violações de liberdade religiosa e de direitos humanos.

Autoridades chinesas prenderam e exilaram o bispo católico romano Peter Shao Zhumin.
Ele foi ordenado bispo em 2007 pelo Papo Bento XVI, sem a aprovação formal da Associação Católica Patriótica Chinesa, controlada pelo Partido Comunista.
No entanto, durante pelo menos 5 anos, Dom Shao trabalhou abertamente como bispo coadjutor (bispo assistente) do bispo da diocese local, Dom Zhu, que é membro da igreja “oficial” reconhecida pelo estado.
As autoridades chinesas tinham conhecimento desse acordo e aprovaram tacitamente o papel administrativo de Dom Shao na diocese de Zhejiang (Wenzhou). Mas após o falecimento de Zhu, o estado subitamente começou a perseguir Dom Shao, culminando com o seu desaparecimento e realocação.
Trata-se de uma medida lamentável e, portanto, solicito que peçam às autoridades chinesas a libertação de Dom Peter Shao Zhumin, a fim de que possa retornar a sua diocese.

Chinese authorities have arrested and temporarily exiled Roman Catholic Bishop, Peter Shao Zhumin.
Bishop Shao was appointed as Bishop in 2007 by Pope Benedict XVI, without the formal approval of the Communist-Party-controlled "Chinese Patriotic Catholic Association".
However, for at least the last 5 years, Bishop Shao openly worked as Co-Adjutor Bishop (i.e., Assistant Bishop), under the senior Bishop of the Diocese, Bishop Zhu, who, himself, was part of the "official" state-recognised Church.
Chinese authorities knew about this arrangement and, by their inaction, tacitly approved of Bishop Shao's administrative role in the Diocese of Zhejiang (Wenzhou). But with the recent passing of Bishop Zhu, the state suddenly swung into action against Bishop Shao - resulting in his disappearance and re-location.
This is a regrettable and retrograde step for China, which has recently made strides in the right direction on the issues of religious freedom and human rights abuses.
With this firmly in mind, we, the undersigned, call on the Chinese authorities to release Bishop Peter Shao Zhumin with immediate effect, and return him to his home diocese of Zhejiang (Wenzhou), where he can be free to lead his flock.
As a second demand, we call on the US State Department and the EU Department of Foreign Affairs and Security Policy to investigate and monitor this particular case, with a view to discussing, with their Chinese counterparts, the importance of religious freedom as a human right - especially with those countries who want to continue to remain trading partners in "good standing" with the US and EU.
To be admitted to the "Developed World" of human rights, China needs to seriously consider its stand on freedom of religion. After 30 years of economic liberalisation, it is now time to liberalise the marketplace of ideas and belief.
Releasing and reinstating Bishop Shao would be a good start.
