NZ PM Jacinda Ardern: Don't make the world's most extreme abortion law even worse
Four-months after introducing the world’s most extreme abortion law, a New Zealand Labour MP has introduced a Bill to make it even worse.
Earlier this year, Jacinda Ardern’s Government brought forward a bill that was passed by MPs which introduced the the world’s most extreme abortion legislation to New Zealand.
The new law scraps the previous 20-week limit and allows terminations on-demand, for any reason, up to birth.
MPs – including Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern – voted against an amendment requiring medical care for babies born alive after a ‘failed’ termination.
The new law has also legalised sex-selective abortion.
Now, ahead of the election, Labour MP Louisa Wall, has introduced the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion (Safe Areas) Amendment Bill which seeks to deny women practical and emotional support outside abortion clinics.
The proposal states this will be done through the creation of so-called “safe areas” up to 150 metres from any part of an abortion facility, with a fine of up to $1,000 for anyone breaking the rules.
These ‘criminalised free speech zones’ would effectively ban volunteers from offering support to women entering abortion clinics and hospitals across New Zealand. They would also ban individuals from peacefully praying in the vicinity of clinics – something which has already happened in the UK.
Every year, thousands of women are helped by pro-life outreach outside abortion centres in New Zealand and around the world, with assistance that includes counselling, help with food, baby clothes, rent and housing among many other things.
Abortion providers and ‘pro-choice’ pressure groups are against the very presence of pro-life groups near abortion clinics, regardless of the vital support that they are providing to women in need, and have now resorted to claiming the help offered outside abortion clinics ‘harasses’ and ‘intimidates’ women.
However, multiple stories can be found around the world of women who have kept their baby as a result of the help they were offered outside of an abortion facility.
Sign the petition now to send a message to the New Zealand Prime Minister, Jacinda Ardern, that women facing crisis pregnancies shouldn’t be denied the support they want and need.
